Independent Saddle Fitter

Saddle Fit for Horse and Rider

What is a Saddle Fitter?

Unlike a bench saddler, who makes saddles, or a saddle salesman, a saddle fitter has specialist training to evaluate saddle fit for horse and rider. A qualified fitter has studied saddle construction and bio-mechanics, and understands the training and riding needs of various disciplines. Ideally we work with your trainers, veterinarians, body workers, and farriers, as well as with bench saddlers, as part of your professional equine support team.

Why do I need a qualified fitter?

When it comes to comfort and performance, a properly fitting saddle is key. A poorly fitted saddle can restrict movement and cause pain for both horse and rider. Pain, from compensatory movements or the saddle itself, often results in unwanted behaviors in the horse such as nipping, bucking, or refusing certain movements. Riders and horses alike lose confidence when they find it difficult to perform due to an ill-fitted saddle.

When is a saddle check necessary?

Horses and riders change shape throughout their lifetimes, and even a small change can make a large difference for the fit of a saddle! Changes in work load, training style, feed, or soundness all affect overall saddle fit. Riders may need adjustments for themselves if they have an injury, or as they progress in their riding. We recommend saddle checks every 6 months, typically spring and autumn, or more frequently when conditions change.

What happens during a saddle check?

A qualified saddle fitter will come in and make suggestions, if needed, to improve the fit, comfort, and safety of your tack. This includes a back exam and measurements of the horse, checking the saddle(s) for wear and tear that may require addressing, doing a seven point saddle fit check on the horse, and then watching the horse and rider together to make sure the saddle is working correctly while in motion.
